Lusitânia APE is an association founded in 1972 by a group of Portuguese residents in Sweden and its objective is to promote interaction between elements of the Portuguese community in Stockholm and its surroundings.

The purpose of Lusitânia is to promote and encourage interaction among the Portuguese community residing in the Stockholm area and to promote Portuguese culture in Sweden. In that sense, the  Lusitania promotes several cultural events annually, including the celebration of the most important national holidays. The events are open not only to the Portuguese community but also to all those interested in learning about Portuguese culture.

Among the events that take place throughout the year, there are Portuguese music concerts, cultural and informative workshops, gastronomic parties, children's activities and theater sessions.

The success of the association depends on the involvement of its members and the Portuguese community. As such, it is crucial for everyone to participate in the implementation of projects and activities that foster community living. Help us to spread our culture in Sweden by promoting the most beautiful “ planted garden in Europe by the sea ” (Tomás Ribeiro).

STORY

​

The Lusitânia association was founded on June 10, 1972 under the name Lusitânia Futebol Clube, by a group of Portuguese football players residing in Stockholm. The taste for sport and the success of “Lusitânia Futebol Clube” spurred the creation of this association of Portuguese people that inherited its name.

​

Among the 12 members of this team, 3 stand out as founders of this project: Jaime Cunha, Elias Pereira and José Vidal. But over the years, many Portuguese have dedicated their time and devotion to this association. Names like Amadeu Batel, António and Maria Afonso, João Filipe Soares, Delfim and Hortense Moreira, Carlos Duarte, Helder Ribeiro and Carlos Reboia. Among many others that will be forever linked to the history of Lusitania.

Football gave rise to Lusitânia, but it was the social life that kept this association active over the years. From the creation of a Portuguese radio station (Rádio Lusitânia), to theater and folklore groups, there were countless events celebrated by Lusitânia in which Portuguese food and music were mandatory presences in the program. Names like José Saramago, Lídia Jorge, Mário de Carvalho, Óscar Lopes, Carlos Paredes, Carlos do Carmo among many others  were a show poster at the Lusitânia parties.

In October 2013, the Lusitânia association received from the hands of the President of the Republic the decoration as an honorary member of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, which distinguished the association for the provision of relevant services to Portugal, abroad, and services in the expansion of Portuguese culture, of its history and values.
